Learn the value (or not) of wikis at Slate

Galaxy Quest: Wikipedia is a real-life Hitchhiker's Guide: huge, nerdy, and imprecise, by Paul Boutin, at Slate, discusses the value and drawbacks of wikis. Fun and easy-to-read, this article is great for those of us who are familiar with the term, but not so much with the details. This article is not technical.

Don't forget the BBC sponsored Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Alaska's entry is a little more extensive than "mostly harmless."

The Alaska entry is off, although, since it's a wiki, any of us who have time can remedy that. Both Daniel and Elise make good points. As the article points out, because of the authority issue, I would not consider information in a wiki to be authoritative. They may sometimes provide a good start to a search, but I wouldn't consider them to be a good end to one!

LISNews carried a recent discussion on Wikipedia and librarians, which included a note that someone at Wikipedia has established a project page for librarians.
