Doggone Helicopter - CC Photos by Army

Alaska

Here's a good Friday treat -- The US Army has a presence on the photosharing site Flickr at http://flickr.com/photos/soldiersmediacenter. The photos are taken and posted by Army photographers and carry a Creative Commons Attribution license. That means you can use the photos in whatever way you like provided you give the photographer credit.

Doing a search on the word "Alaska" brought up 30 photos, including the one pictured here with the capition:

"Meki, an air Force military working dog, is hoisted up to a medical evacuation helicopter during training held at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Matthew T MacRoberts) (Released)"

Neat picture!

Generally, I really like seeing a CreativeCommons license, but here, I wonder why, if these are official photographs, there's any copyright at all. As publications of a federal agency, shouldn't they be in the public domain?

That's a good question. If photos were taken by soldiers in the course of their official army duties, there would be no doubt that they would be public domain.

If they were personal pictures and given to the army media center, then I *think* they'd be copyrighted and thus could be licensed under CC.

Then we have to think about whether any pictures taken by deployed troops really count as "personal photos", since they would not have been taken if the soldiers had not been deployed at government expense.

Sorta makes the head spin. I might check into the army media center a bit more to see exactly what kinds of photos are being posted to Flickr. My guess is that it is a mix of public domain and private photos.
